Because we want to keep the Notebooks as small as possible in terms of memory requirements (as well as disk space used), if you have large topics (e.g. greater than 2-3000 characters) in your Notebooks you may want to test the Notebook thoroughly before you distribute it.
The initial memory requirement for a newly created Notebook is 80k - if you have large topics, or a large number of topics, this may need to be increased, otherwise the Notebook may run out of memory when you try and perform a search. If the memory allocation is not large enough, the application will not run when double-clicked — you will be warned to increase the memory partition first.
In general a Notebook topic can contain up to 32,000 characters. However, depending on the font and font size you use to display the topic, this may be reduced. For example, a topic containing 25,000 characters of Times font at a size of 36 points will almost invariably be too large for the Notebook to handle. In this case the problem is not one of a lack of memory allocated to the Notebook, but one of the underlying Macintosh technology used—you will need to split your large topic up into several smaller (shorter) ones.
